Moments to treasure

Last night I caught Mr Moo counter surfing. Not something to generally be encouraged in a dog, I know, but when your dog is a month away from reaching 13 and a half and you didn’t think you’d hear their front paws hit the kitchen worktop ever again, it becomes a moment to celebrate, a memory to treasure.

This morning Mr Moo and I did the Smacky-Botty-Dance. I couldn’t tell you quite why this little game started, but it began with Mr Moo and our much missed Cassie, many years ago. The dog chooses to walk through your open legs, from the front, and when their bottom end nears your body, you give them very gentle bottom pats while singing Smacky-Botttttttttttty a number of times. Then the dog walks around to the front again and you repeat. Tails wag, Mum (and Dad) smile and for a moment, all is good in the world.

I realised recently that our youngest rescue dog, Daisy, hadn’t curled up in bed with Mr Moo for a while. She had, for a long while, climbed into bed with him in the kitchen each morning while I washed up and got their breakfast ready, and she’d often do the same for their evening meal. I wondered, since this had stopped, if she had sensed something wasn’t right, before we realised. It made me sad that she no longer joined him – and it was oh so cute to see the two of them snuggled up.

Well this morning I turned around, while washing up, to see her snuggled up on Mr Moo. It brought happy tears to my eyes.

The smallest things are often the biggest treasures. Remember these wonderful moments.

Mr Moo, posing in the garden yesterday.

Me and Mr Moo

As some of you know, we found a very worrying lump on our precious black Lab boy recently and due to the position of the lump + his age + other health worries, we made the decision, in discussion with the vet, that it wouldn’t be in Mr Moo’s interest to operate.

We were back at the vet yesterday for a check-up. Not much fun for the poor boy, having to have an examination there, but he was very good and was rewarded with tuna cake afterwards.

The very good news is that the lump hasn’t grown significantly in the 11 days-ish since the vet first examined him. It may have grown a little, but not substantially. I am, of course, still believing it can and will shrink away.

We are to keep monitoring him, adding the things to his food that help things move along more easily and, most importantly, ensuring he continues to enjoy life. We are bringing him off the steroids, because we felt the negative effect was starting to outweigh potential benefit.

Thank you, so much, to everyone who is keeping Mr Moo in their thoughts. He is a most precious boy. I have felt at times over the last 11 days or so that my heart is being torn into tiny pieces all over again, but I must remain positive for my boy. He deserves the best.

When the going gets tough …

Hug a Labrador.

I can’t say it’s been the happiest week of my life (see previous post about our darling Mr Moo) but still, my wonderful dogs bring such joy into my life. I’m remaining positive, between the tears, for my gorgeous boy.

Hugs with this lovely girl, who is beautiful both inside and out, always make things a bit better.

My darling Mr Moo …

… could do with your healing thoughts, so if you read this, would you please send some his way? He is 13 years old – though still manages to be a cheeky chap at times – and after 12+ years with outstanding physical health, he has succumbed to a few worrying health issues in the last six months.

On my Birthday, on Sunday, I discovered a lump on Mr Moo in a very worrying place. We took him to the vet on Monday morning and the vet confirmed that it is indeed in a very difficult place to operate. Given the position, his age and other health issues and following discussion with the vet, we have decided it would not be in the poor boy’s interest to try to remove it. We are trying a course of drugs to see if we can shrink the lump and I am, as always, using supplements for him too. He has received Reiki since he first came to live with us many years ago and he is also now receiving healing from some very lovely people around the country, actually the world. If you can spare some healing thoughts, I’d love for you to send them his way too. Thank you all.

Mr Moo is a very special boy. We’ve been through so much together and I owe him a great deal. Everything in fact. I just want him to get well.

Birthday Cocktails? It’d be rude not to …

Today is my Birthday.

I started off the day with a strawberry smoothie, made by my wonderful husband and served in this beautiful chalice from a local pottery. I shall finish the day with a more alcoholic version, in the form of a strawberry daiquiri!

Anyone who knew me at University all those years ago, will remember my fondness for cocktails at the Marina, especially during Happy Hour! It’s exactly 20 years since I enjoyed rather too many alcohol beverages, including a large number of cocktails (well, it would be rude to say no when people want to buy you a drink for your Birthday, wouldn’t it?). My Birthday today is a slightly calmer affair. I’m spending a relaxing day at home with my family and hope to wake up with rather less of a headache than all those years ago.

My lovely husband has bought me an Original Sock Dog (see my last blog post if you are wondering what I’m talking about) who will be custom made in a likeness of our darling and much missed Jasper. I won’t receive this for some time because they are custom made and I couldn’t order mine any sooner or I’d have spoilt the surprise for my husband. So excited.

It’s also my first Birthday as a vegan, a change I made to my diet just a few months ago, after years of thinking it was the way for me to go. I am not brilliant at cooking (thankfully my husband is) but I do love food and have been looking out for yummy vegan recipes. I have been drooling (too much time around dogs) over the ‘Peace of Love’ Mouthwatering Berry Cheesecake from Mouthwatering Vegan Recipes, for my Birthday and will be giving this a go – with adult supervision <g> – later.

Hope you are all having a great day.
