Little Jasper

A little update for those of you who have followed the story of our Jasper, who we adopted from Oldies Club after “failing” as foster parents rather quickly:)

As some of you know, Jasper had a couple of strokes/episodes, one just before Christmas and one back in March. It was a rather stressful experience for him (and us) but he’s a strong minded chap and we very much wanted to give him the chance to recover. Thankfully he started to improve from each episode, very quickly, although it took a while each time for him to seem back to normal. Along with vet advice and good food, he had Reiki and homeopathic Arnica.

With the second episode, he was reluctant to eat, which was worrying as he doesn’t carry excess weight and he generally LOVES his food. We tried various things but it was when I grabbed a tin of mackerel in tomato sauce from the cupboard that he regained his appetite, so I added some mackerel to each meal for the next few weeks to ensure he was eating. He rather liked that and invented a little mackerel song which he would start barking singing, when the mackerel appeared:lol:

I’ve been cautious about the amount of exercise he’s been having as I didn’t want him to over do it. He’s had a heart murmur since before we adopted him and he seemed to slow down a bit following these episodes, but we have been enjoying gentle walks around the village – and he does love to sniff everything, so this has worked well.

We took him to see our Holistic Vet for a check-up this week and we are going to try him on a few additional supplements to boost his health too. After the visit we treated him and one of our other dogs to a little walk in the woods – lovely sunny day, but plenty of shade. He had a wonderful time and it made my heart soar to see him trotting around happily. I know a few months back I didn’t know if we’d ever see him doing that again. We’re very grateful to Nick and to our conventional vets at Garston for helping us with our wonderful dogs.

Smiley, happy Jasper:)

Walking alongside me in the hope of a treat I suspect!

Jasper really is such a sweet, special boy. He’s been with us about 16 months now and fitted in perfectly from the start. We may have taken him in as an emergency foster but I shall always believe he was absolutely meant to come to us:)For anyone who remembers the early hug photo of him and me in the snow, just days after he arrived, here’s an updated version:)

Love you Jasper ♥

And to anyone thinking of getting a dog, don’t forget the wonderful older dogs. So many in rescue and there are older dogs to suit all sorts of people/families and lifestyles. Take a look at Oldies Club to see some of them.

Adopted ~ Happy Birthday Quiz! ~ Pet Photography

25 August: Found out today that gorgeous Quiz has been adopted:)

I’d love you all to join me in wishing the beautiful Quiz a very Happy 10th Birthday and keeping fingers and paws crossed that she receives everything on her Wish List, especially a new forever home.

Quiz is a ten year old female German Shepherd Dog (GSD), who has been at  Bath Cats & Dogs Home for over three years now. This beautiful, gentle and sensitive girl was part of a court case filed against her owner by the RSPCA, after being one of a number of dogs kept in an overcrowded home and not given proper care and attention:(

I knew that Quiz can be quite shy when meeting new people, but that she is a friendly girl once she gets to know someone. I think my home-made tuna cake helped convince her I was a friendly person who just wanted to get to know her a little. She was not my easiest subject to photograph so far, but I hope these photos will help someone amazing, who is able to offer her the wonderful home she seeks, fall in love with her. Quiz is a very special girl.

Quiz is looking for a quieter home without young children and can live with children aged 12+. She can live with another dog(s), following a successful introduction and needs a kind and patient owner who will help her to adjust to  living in a home after spending most of her life in a kennel.

Doesn’t she have the most soulful eyes?

The rescue says that Quiz tends to bond more with one person, although she is friendly towards everyone she knows. Having spent a little time with her, I do believe if you are the right person/family, that you will be rewarded over and over by opening your heart and home to this sweet girl.

The rescue advises that Quiz is quite strong on the lead and wears a harness. She dislikes wearing a Halti and will scratch it off straight away, so her new family will  need to continue walking her on a harness. This lovely girl gets very insecure when she’s away from the rescue and is always wanting to come back, so she will need time to settle with her new family and realise that she is now home for good.

Oh Quiz, what beautiful big paws you have:)

The rescue says Quiz mixes better with other dogs when off-lead (as do many other dogs!). When on lead she does tend to lunge and bark at other dogs, though this is just a front and she doesn’t mean them any harm.

A cheeky little tongue!

Quiz may be 10 now, but she’s still able to spring into action when she wants to!

My overall impression of Quiz is that she is a very gentle and sweet girl who really deserves to find a special home of her very own. I think she will make a fabulous addition to the right family and I so hope she finds that special someone(s) very soon. Good luck Quiz!

If you feel you can offer Quiz a loving and appropriate home, you will need to contact Bath Cats & Dogs Home directly on 01225 787 321, or complete the Home’s online rehoming form, which can be found here.

Adopted ~ Gangly Gengis ~ sweet and full of fun

27 May 2011: Very pleased to update that Gengis has recently been adopted:)Hope he has a wonderful life in his forever home. Please click on the tab to the left of the blog and look at the links at the end, to see more dogs who are still looking for a great home.

Recently I spent some time with Gengis, a gorgeous and sweet young Lurcher who is at Bath Cats and Dogs Home and looking for an amazing forever home. Gengis is a two year old male, who arrived at the rescue as a stray. His carer says he is playful, with endless amounts of energy – as you would hope a young dog would be. Check out the photos at the end of the blog to see him in action, he’s full of fun:)He is also very cuddly and leans against you, as all good Lurchers like to:)

Look into my eyes …

A scratch behind the ears … and a cheeky smile!

Gengis was very strong on a lead when he first arrived, but staff and volunteers at the rescue have worked hard with this boy and he now walks beautifully on a lead, although he may lunge at some dogs. A new adopter will need to continue this work in a home environment to ensure he doesn’t revert to old ways. He does listen well to direction, but will play up if he thinks he can get away with it:wink:The rescue runs socialisation classes, which a new adopter would be welcome to attend.

Gengis has the loveliest, softest white patch of hair on his chest:)

Isn’t he just gorgeous?

Gengis’s carer says he is her pride and joy – and he is certainly a gorgeous chap, don’t you think? When it comes to other dogs, he is a lady’s man and good with playful, yet submissive girls, so he could certainly live with a female dog(s) following a successful introduction. He is looking for a home where any children are aged 10+ and as he is a stray, there is no history on how he would be with cats.

Handsome, handsome boy!

Still looking for a wonderful home …

Gengis would suit a home where someone is around most of the day, although his carer tells me that he would be happy to be left for a few hours, provided suitable exercise was provided before hand.

Pick me!

A day with Fred & Martha

Yesterday I spent the day with a very good friend of mine and her two gorgeous Staffies, both adopted from rescue. Please meet Fred (brindle snuggle monster) and Martha (darling little sweetheart).

Fred and Martha (and their Mum) took me for a lovely walk along the canal. Both dogs are excellent with other dogs and said hello to various dogs we met along the canal path. We met a collie who was running up and down the canal path, as though he/she were looking for someone. We were going to try to grab them next time they passed, but thankfully we then met them reunited with their owners.

At one point, Fred decided to have a little dip in the canal:)and I did wonder as we met a couple with their three Labs, and all had to pass on a narrow bit of the canal path, if I was going to end up having a dip too:lol:

I love this photo of Fred (below) as we sat waiting in the car while my friend popped into the house before we headed to a pub for lunch. Isn’t Fred completely gorgeous?

Little Martha and her smilie Staffie face – lovely!:)

As the weather was decent and we had the dogs with us, we sat outside for lunch. The dogs sat on their blanket and had some doggie treats while we ate:)

Yummy!

Watching Mum!

We really are not sure quite what Fred was doing in the photo below:lol:He went into this position and stayed there for some time. Not sure if he was inspecting under the table for the possibility of dropped food, or what, but he made us smile:)

The adorable little Martha, who looks like she is about to break into a Woooooo in this one, I think.

We went back to their house after lunch and Fred joined me on the sofa. He is very snuggly indeed and got very comfy with his head on my lap. So comfy that I didn’t have the heart to disturb him for a while when I needed to visit the bathroom. Having lost our beautiful Cassie last Summer, it was good to refill those brindle-cuddle-batteries a little. Thank you Fred.

Thanks to my friend and the lovely Fred and Martha for a wonderful day:)

Lovely Labradors

Labrador Retrievers are lovely dogs and are the most popular breed in the UK, according to KC registrations at least.

If you are thinking of getting a Labrador, after you’ve done your research into the breed to make sure you are suited to them, please look into rescue. There are lovely Labs in rescue in need of amazing homes. Not these ones though – they’re already spoken for:wink:
