~ National Black Dog Day ~

Today is National Black Dog Day. A special day to promote just how wonderful black dogs are (as indeed, of course, are all dogs) and to encourage people to adopt a black dog from their local rescue, shelter etc. Black dogs can find themselves overlooked in rescue, something I have never understood because they are so beautiful.

The phrase ‘Black Dog’ is also associated with depression. My beautiful black dog is my sunshine, however, and I am incredibly grateful and blessed to share my life with her, today and always. I very sadly lost my then oldest dog earlier this year and am facing some major worries currently and having this beautiful girl’s presence in my life every day is one of the best things I could possibly wish for, along with her little Sis.

If you are a good person who is looking to bring a dog into their lives and can offer a loving and suitable home, please check out your local rescue centre/shelter (such as Bath Cats & Dogs Home), breed rescue (such as LRSE&C) etc.

Please consider adopting an older dog, who may also find it more difficult to find a forever home. Take a look at Oldies Club, a volunteer-run charity which rescues and rehomes older dogs and also promotes older dogs seeking homes, for many other UK rescue – click on the link with your heart open and a tissue to hand!

Adopt, please.

~ Help Take This Street Collection Around the UK ~

Hello! There’s a virtual street collection happening this weekend to raise funds for Oldies Club, a volunteer-run charity, which rescues and rehomes older dogs in the UK. Please click HERE to put a donation in the virtual collection tin:-)

Oldies Club’s vet bills are huge. Thousands and thousands of pounds, EVERY month. It does really, really, really need your help to continue its work rescuing and rehoming older dogs.

Maybe you wish you could help more at ‘real life’ events, but can’t because of work/personal commitments or circumstances, or distance?

Perhaps you’re just not a big fan of our delightfully(!) changeable British weather and love the idea of helping dogs in rescue from the comfort of your own home? Well here’s your chance to support a wonderful charity without having to venture outside, or worry about getting cold or wet! Grab a cup of hot coffee, tea, whatever your preference, and help Oldies Club make this a really successful fundraising weekend … please?:-)

Will you help take this street collection to as many places around the UK (and beyond) as possible by using the magic buttons underneath this post and encouraging your dog-loving family, friends, colleagues etc. to help too?  Thank you, very much:-)

~ Does your dog have the Woof Factor? ~

Hello! There’s a cool photo competition happening at the moment in the UK. It’s called the Woof Factor and you can read all about it and find out how to enter your dog(s) by clicking HERE.

Woof Factor gives your dog the chance to shine and win some prizes, while you help raise funds for Oldies Club, a wonderful volunteer-run dog rescue charity that rescues and rehomes older dogs. Your dog doesn’t need to be an Oldies Club dog, or even a rescue dog, for you to enter a photo of them. They only need to be aged 7+.

I am not able to enter, due to personal connections and stuff, but if I was allowed, I might well enter this photo …

~ The Suitcase Dogs ~

Hello blog. It’s been a while.

There have been a few stories reaching the UK’s national media recently, about dogs being abandoned in public places. One poor soul in particular who was left with a suitcase containing some of his belongings – a pillow, toy, food bowl and food. Others have been tied up minus the suitcase, but with food/water, a note etc.

Dog abandonment is a sad and serious issue and I think it’s wonderful that the UK’s dog lovers open their hearts and step up to offer these dogs a new home. The suitcase dog was happily rehomed and hopefully the others abandoned in a similar way will be just as fortunate.

The thing is though, there are thousands of other dogs sat in pounds and rescues, in kennels and foster homes, around the UK right now whose stories will never reach our national media. They weren’t left with a suitcase or a note, but they are all waiting for – and equally deserving of – a forever home. Sadly, since thousands of healthy dogs are put to sleep each year, some will never find one.

Their reasons for ending up in pounds/rescues will vary. Maybe their previous guardian became very ill or sadly passed away, or their family broke up and no one felt able to keep the dog. Perhaps loss of a home/job resulted in the dog being given up, or they just had a really crap ‘guardian’ who didn’t bother to claim them when they got lost. They may be a puppy, a young adult, an oldie. They may have been waiting days, weeks, months or very sadly even years for a forever home, but they have one thing in common … they would all love someone to step up for them too. So if you felt drawn to a suitcase dog that has already found a forever home, take a look at Oldies Club, your local rescue centre, a breed rescue and find your new best friend. Lovely paws photographed at Bath Cats & Dogs Home.

Make a difference. Adopt.
